The Feeling of Walking Home After Work
After a long day of teaching English in Seoul, something changes in me.
By the time I step outside, the city is still alive—bright lights, people talking, restaurants full. But inside, I feel the opposite. Quiet. Drained. I’ve used up all my energy for the day.
Sometimes, I’m too tired to talk to anyone.
Not because I don’t want to… but because I just can’t. My mind feels slow, like everything is moving but I’m not fully there. Students, conversations, explanations—it all blends together. By the end of the day, I don’t even remember everything I said.
Sometimes, I don’t even know what’s going on around me.
I just walk.
I walk past people, past shops, past noise—but it feels distant, like I’m watching everything from far away. My body is there, but my mind is somewhere else, just trying to rest.
And in those moments, I miss a different kind of life.
I think about places like Fiji or Hawaii, where the day ends slowly. Where you can sit, breathe, hear the ocean, and just exist without feeling rushed or drained.
Here, everything moves fast—even after work.
But sometimes, in the middle of that walk home, something small happens. A cool breeze. A quiet street. A moment where the noise fades just a little.
And I breathe.
Just for a second.
That walk home becomes more than just getting from one place to another. It becomes the space between who I have to be during the day… and who I am when I finally rest.
Because after giving so much of yourself all day, sometimes all you really need…
is silence.
